A Luminous Halo

Pop-Top Fashion

I dashed into a cute little boutique in Hampden, Massachusetts recently and spotted this bag. It's made of pop-tops from soda cans, crocheted together. I got excited when I saw it because I have been saving pop-tops for years with the intention of making apparel out of them.

I wouldn't make a bag, however, because I think it would be too hard to clean. Purses take a lot of wear, get parked on the floor, and need to be durable. Every purse I've ever owned has had at least one run-in with melted, squished Junior Mints, and I'm not sure how I'd get that mess out of all those crevices. What I want to make instead is a vest.

I have a couple of problems, though. One, I don't drink soda, so accumulating the pop-tops is slow going. And two, I don't know how to crochet. But the project is on my bucket list anyway. If I live long enough, I may actually get around to doing it. Meanwhile, I feel a sisterly pride when I see someone else's similar handiwork, proudly displayed and carrying a healthy price tag.
