A Luminous Halo

"Life is not a series of gig lamps symmetrically arranged; life is a luminous halo, a semi-transparent envelope surrounding us from the beginning of consciousness to the end." --Virginia Woolf

"by Cicily Corbett"

Today I sent off my article on conservatorship, along with an invoice, as instructed. I was being paid by the word--$1.50 a word, to be exact--so I took the word count off of MS Word and did the math. I fretted for a moment over the fact that my byline had been included in the word count, even though it wasn't perhaps technically part of the article. And then I decided I was overthinking things. And as I look back on this project, that was the sweetest part of all...$4.50 just for writing "by Cicily Corbett" under the title. Every week, I have to fight the local paper just to keep my byline in--it's the first thing they try to lop off if they're looking to save space. And they certainly don't pay me for it.

Feels like a turning point of sorts.
