I've been keeping an eye on this broken lamppost at the end of my street. Over three months ago, the whole top section was knocked askew, presumably by a truck backing up around the corner. It stayed like that for a while, then was festooned with yellow caution tape. At a point, the broken section was taken off. No repair in sight.
The attractive retro-looking lampposts were put in by the city, unlike those on Mattoon Street, which residents paid for privately. It's therefore the city's responsibility to repair them. In Springfield, that can be a death sentence.
They say the new federal court house at the end of the block will be finished in May. Is that the deadline for getting everything in the neighborhood spiffed up? At this rate, May is sounding good.
