A turophile is a lover of cheese. I'm a turophile, I guess you could say.
A turophobe is one who hates or fears cheese. My daughter, who is a strict vegan, is certainly not afraid of cheese, but she avoids it completely, so I guess you could call her a turophobe.
A turophiliac, on the other hand, is one who has an abnormal fascination with cheese. Not so good for the arteries. Brian, are you listening??

ReplyDeleteOn Friday, Nov. 2, the Wall Street Journal ran its "Tastings" column, by connoisseuirs Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher. The column this week was in praise of Penfolds Grange, an Australian Shiraz.
Between 7 and 9 thousand cases of the stuff are produced every year, released five years after the harvest.
"Even though Australia has becomne a major player on the world's wine scene over the past decade, no other wine has come close to approaching the quality and fame of Grange."
Having sampled 10 vintages of the stuff dating from 1971 to 2001, Gaiter and Brecher report remarkable consistency over the decades. Even the 1971 wine "could age for still more years."
The taste is that of "big, ripe fruit, even with a good dose of oak ... a wine of tremendous elegance even with some explosive intensity."
Of the '90 vintage in particular, they report, (and I'll take them at their word because a bottle of the '90 costs $695) -- it has the taste of "deep, dark, tightly wound fruit and a kind of haunting smokiness."
