Here's a table I like, enough to buy if I had $2,800 to burn. It's "The Wave" interactive LED coffee table, available for purchase at becausewecan.org and manufactured by Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories. It's made of sustainable wood with a thick clear plastic top (or a solid, thick, heavy glass top for an extra $300) with a circuit board underneath. A network of 32 active and passive near-infrared optical sensors and 480 bright white LEDs create a "very slight attractive twinkling" which becomes a swirl of light when something is moved over it.
In the photo, the cat's tail is swishing, causing the lights to glow brightly in that area. The lights near the cat's motionless body and elsewhere on the table are barely lit. I think this table would be endless fun, especially for kids. And probably pets.
