Diary January 22, 1960: I Manage to Live without My Pocketbook
"Becky" was Becky Pache, my penpal. She was from Pennsylvania. I loved a story about horses she had written in a children's magazine, and her bio blurb stated that she wanted penpals, so I began an enthusiastic correspondence with her, mostly about horses. (I was horse-crazy at the time.) After a few lackluster exchanges, she admitted that she was actually a dog person, not a horse person. I felt humiliated. Still do. We stopped writing after that.
