A Luminous Halo

"Life is not a series of gig lamps symmetrically arranged; life is a luminous halo, a semi-transparent envelope surrounding us from the beginning of consciousness to the end." --Virginia Woolf

Luck Be a Lady

It's official! The "Untitled Blackjack Picture" finally has a name.

The movie's based on Ben Mezrich's book Bringing Down the House, but a movie with that name already existed. The producers were going to call the movie "21," but then legal problems surfaced, and the project became the "Untitled Blackjack Picture, formerly known as '21.'" At one point, the filmmakers were encouraging Boston Globe readers to think up a new name.

Legal hurdles have apparently been cleared, and the movie is now officially "21." Boston was still basking in the glow of "The Departed" when Kevin Spacey and company arrived to film "21." Now the Hollywood crew is gone, the movie's not coming out till next year, and wannabe actors in the area are concentrating on the next movie to be made locally: "27 Dresses."

According to Variety: "'Grey's Anatomy' star Katherine Heigl will play a single woman who has served as a bridesmaid 27 times. She is enlisted once again for the job, and this time it's particularly painful: Her sister is marrying the man the bridesmaid is madly in love with."

Filming on this one begins in Providence in May. Apparently lots of extras will be needed for the wedding scenes. M's got a summer home not too far from where the set will be. The casting director's got our resumes and headshots. Now the best we can do is pray. Luck, be a lady tonight!

Now THAT starts a chain of associations.

The phrase "Luck be a lady" of course comes from the pen of composer and lyricist Frank Loesser, the creative genius behind "Guys and Dolls."

Here are the lyrics in full.

They call you Lady Luck.
But there is room for doubt
At times you have a very unladylike way of running out
You're this a date with me
The pickings have been lush
And yet before this evening is over you might give me the brush
You might forget your manners
You might refure to stay and So the best that I can to is pray.

Luck be a lady tonight
Luck be a lady tonight
Luck if you've ever been a lady to begin with
Luck be a lady tonight.

Luck let a gentleman see
How nice a dame you can be
I've seen the way you've treated other guys you've been with
Luck be a lady with me.

A lady doesn't leave her escort
It isn't fair, it isn't nice
A lady doesn't wander all over the room
And blow on some other guy's dice.
So let's keep the party polite
Never get out of my sight
Stick with me baby, I'm the fellow you came in with
Luck be a lady
Luck be a lady
Luck be a lady tonight.

Luck be a lady tonight.
Luck be a lady tonight.
Luck, if you've ever been a lady to begin with
Luck be a lady tonight.

Luck let a gentleman see

Luck let a gentleman see

How nice a dame you can be

How nice a dame you can be

I know the way you've treated other guys you've been with

Luck me a lady, a lady, be a lady with me.

Luck be a lady with me

A Lady wouldn't flirt with strangers
She'd have a heart, she'd have a soul
A lady wouldn't make little snake eyes at me
When I've got my life on this roll.

Roll 'em, roll 'em, roll 'em, snake eyes
Roll 'em, roll 'em, roll 'em!

So let's keep the party polite

Let's keep the party polite

Never get out of my sight

CRAPSHOTERS

Never get out of my sight.
Stick here, baby, stick here, baby.

Stick with me, baby, I'm the fellow you came in with
Luck be a lady

Luck be a lady

Luck be a lady tonight.

Coming out, coming out, coming out
Right!
