A Luminous Halo

Cruel Shoes

Yesterday, the Springfield YMCA got a new playground, courtesy of Home Depot and the KaBOOM! Foundation. 180 volunteers, most of them from Home Depot, built it from start to finish between 8 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. I went over there to take notes on the action because it is the subject of my next article for the YMCA column I write.

Orange t-shirts, jeans, and work boots or sneakers were the uniform of the day. Lots of cameras were in evidence, especially near the end when the various teams were lined up for group shots. I had a camera, too. But the best photo op, in my opinion, was the CBS reporter in her black stiletto pumps and minidress. I was taking pictures of her as she took pictures of everybody else.

I just wish I'd brought along a video cam....a still doesn't capture the effect of this young woman trying to tote 25 pounds of camera equipment back and forth across 9 inches of freshly-laid mulch while wearing shoes as cruel as any I own. And I own some pretty cruel shoes.
